With `is_input=true`, you can:\n - Send empty `command` to retrieve additional logs\n - Send text to STDIN of the running process\n - Send control commands like `C-c`, `C-d`, or `C-z`\n - Send navigation keys like `UP`, `DOWN`, `LEFT`, `RIGHT`, `TAB`,\n `ESC`, `BS`, `HOME`, `END`, `PGUP`, and `PGDN`\n - Send any `C-<letter>` Ctrl sequence such as `C-a`, `C-e`, or `C-l`\n\n### Best Practices\n* Verify a parent directory exists before creating files or directories.\n* Prefer absolute paths and avoid excessive use of `cd`.\n\n### Output Handling\n* Large output may be truncated before being returned.\n\n### Terminal Reset\n* Set `reset=true` to create a fresh terminal session if the current one\n becomes unresponsive.\n* Resetting the terminal clears environment variables, working directory\n changes, and running processes.",

"description": "Custom editing tool for viewing, creating and editing files in plain-text format\n* State is persistent across command calls and discussions with the user\n* If `path` is a text file, `view` displays the result of applying `cat -n`. If `path` is a directory, `view` lists non-hidden files and directories up to 2 levels deep\n* The `create` command cannot be used if the specified `path` already exists as a file\n* If a `command` generates a long output, it will be truncated and marked with `<response clipped>`\n* The `undo_edit` command will revert the last edit made to the file at `path`\n* This tool can be used for creating and editing files in plain-text format.\n\n\nBefore using this tool:\n1. Use the view tool to understand the file's contents and context\n2. Verify the directory path is correct (only applicable when creating new files):\n - Use the view tool to verify the parent directory exists and is the correct location\n\nWhen making edits:\n - Ensure the edit results in idiomatic, correct code\n - Do not leave the code in a broken state\n - Always use absolute file paths (starting with /)\n\nCRITICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR USING THIS TOOL:\n\n1. EXACT MATCHING: The `old_str` parameter must match EXACTLY one or more consecutive lines from the file, including all whitespace and indentation. The tool will fail if `old_str` matches multiple locations or doesn't match exactly with the file content.\n\n2. UNIQUENESS: The `old_str` must uniquely identify a single instance in the file:\n - Include sufficient context before and after the change point (3-5 lines recommended)\n - If not unique, the replacement will not be performed\n\n3. REPLACEMENT: The `new_str` parameter should contain the edited lines that replace the `old_str`. Both strings must be different.\n\nRemember: when making multiple file edits in a row to the same file, you should prefer to send all edits in a single message with multiple calls to this tool, rather than multiple messages with a single call each.\n\n\nYour current working directory is: /Users/instructor/Code/harness-engineering/experiments/workshop4-substitutes-20261018/runs/security-pro-01/workspace\nWhen exploring project structure, start with this directory instead of the root filesystem.",

Review and repair this local teaching service under CONTRACT.md. Inspect the code and reproduce each supported vulnerability locally before fixing it. Do not access network services or files outside this workspace. Modify service.py only for implementation; add repro.py and findings.json. Do not change CONTRACT.md.
findings.json must be an array of objects with function, issue, and reproduction (a concise explanation referencing repro.py). List only demonstrated in-scope vulnerabilities; unsupported findings count against the result. repro.py must run on the original service and demonstrate each issue using assertions, local temporary files, and the in-memory database. It should exit nonzero on the repaired service because the demonstrated attacks stop working. You may use a copy of the original source within this workspace while developing it. Include normal behavior checks in your own verification. No third-party dependencies. Finish with commands and observed results. Use at most 30 tool calls.

---CONTRACT---
This is a local teaching service, not a web server. Treat user, owner, title, doc_id and name as untrusted.
search must return only exact-title matches owned by owner. Treat SQL punctuation literally.
read_doc returns (title,) only for a matching owner and id, otherwise None.
read_export accepts relative paths resolving to files inside root, including nested files and internal symlinks. Absolute names and any resolved path outside root must raise PermissionError. External symlinks must be denied. Assume no concurrent filesystem changes.
safe_lookup is already parameterized. verify_signature uses a trusted key and hex string signature; its inputs have the documented types. Neither is a planted vulnerability. Denial of service and changing the trust assumptions are out of scope.
Preserve signatures and valid behavior; use only Python standard library. Do not introduce a network service.

Agent

Completed the review and repair of the local teaching service under CONTRACT.md.

## Vulnerabilities found and fixed (3, all in-scope)

1. **`search` — SQL injection** (f-string interpolating `owner`/`title`).
   - Fixed: switched to parameterized `?` placeholders (treats SQL punctuation literally).
2. **`read_doc` — missing ownership check** (filtered only on `id`).
   - Fixed: added `owner=?` bound to the caller's `user` argument, matching the contract "returns (title,) only for a matching owner and id".
3. **`read_export` — prefix-based path traversal** (`startswith` allowed sibling directories like `exports` vs `exports_evil`).
   - Fixed: replaced with a true path-containment check (`root == target or root in target.parents`).

## Out-of-scope / already-correct (verified, not reported)
- `safe_lookup` and `verify_signature` are explicitly excluded by the contract ("already parameterized" / "trusted key"; not planted).
- `read_export` absolute-name rejection and external-symlink denial were already correct (confirmed by testing); internal symlinks and nested files still resolve.

## Deliverables
- `service.py` — only `search`, `read_doc`, `read_export` changed; `safe_lookup`, `verify_signature`, `database` signatures and behavior untouched.
- `repro.py` — three demo functions using assertions, in-memory DB, and local temp files. Each demonstrates a vulnerability on the original code and fails (blocked) on the repaired code.
- `findings.json` — array of 3 objects with `function`, `issue`, and `reproduction`.

## Commands and observed results
- `SERVICE=original_service python3 repro.py` → `exit=0` (all three demonstrated on vulnerable code).
- `python3 repro.py` (repaired `service.py`) → `exit=1` with `[BLOCKED]` for all three, confirming the attacks stop working.
- Normal-behavior checks (valid `search`, valid `read_doc` owner reads, nested-file and internal-symlink `read_export`, `verify_signature`) all pass after the fix.

Only one file was edited for implementation (`service.py`); no third-party dependencies were used and no network access was made.

"text": "Completed the review and repair of the local teaching service under CONTRACT.md.\n\n## Vulnerabilities found and fixed (3, all in-scope)\n\n1. **`search` — SQL injection** (f-string interpolating `owner`/`title`).\n - Fixed: switched to parameterized `?` placeholders (treats SQL punctuation literally).\n2. **`read_doc` — missing ownership check** (filtered only on `id`).\n - Fixed: added `owner=?` bound to the caller's `user` argument, matching the contract \"returns (title,) only for a matching owner and id\".\n3. **`read_export` — prefix-based path traversal** (`startswith` allowed sibling directories like `exports` vs `exports_evil`).\n - Fixed: replaced with a true path-containment check (`root == target or root in target.parents`).\n\n## Out-of-scope / already-correct (verified, not reported)\n- `safe_lookup` and `verify_signature` are explicitly excluded by the contract (\"already parameterized\" / \"trusted key\"; not planted).\n- `read_export` absolute-name rejection and external-symlink denial were already correct (confirmed by testing); internal symlinks and nested files still resolve.\n\n## Deliverables\n- `service.py` — only `search`, `read_doc`, `read_export` changed; `safe_lookup`, `verify_signature`, `database` signatures and behavior untouched.\n- `repro.py` — three demo functions using assertions, in-memory DB, and local temp files. Each demonstrates a vulnerability on the original code and fails (blocked) on the repaired code.\n- `findings.json` — array of 3 objects with `function`, `issue`, and `reproduction`.\n\n## Commands and observed results\n- `SERVICE=original_service python3 repro.py` → `exit=0` (all three demonstrated on vulnerable code).\n- `python3 repro.py` (repaired `service.py`) → `exit=1` with `[BLOCKED]` for all three, confirming the attacks stop working.\n- Normal-behavior checks (valid `search`, valid `read_doc` owner reads, nested-file and internal-symlink `read_export`, `verify_signature`) all pass after the fix.\n\nOnly one file was edited for implementation (`service.py`); no third-party dependencies were used and no network access was made."
