Workshop 6 · 6B · Lead and three workers

The team lead reached a capped stop. Its archive state is normalized for inert viewing and does not mean the team workflow finished. All three worker histories are included.

63 complete recorded events. This is a transcript, not a Canvas screenshot. Commands are historical evidence.

Python code is restricted to the fixture modules and json, copy, unittest, re, collections, itertools, math, random, decimal, typing, functools, statistics, time. Introspection, filesystem/environment/process/network APIs and dynamic execution are unavailable. Both relative paths and the virtual /workspace alias work in tools, including cd /workspace && python3 -m unittest -v. The tool interpreter is Python 3.9 with stdlib only; avoid syntax/APIs requiring newer Python. For probes use python3 -c with a quoted Python string; use file_editor for source/test writes. Only codec.py, reducer.py, checkpoint.py, pipeline.py, test_importer.py, test_codec.py, test_reducer.py and test_checkpoint.py may change. Tools cannot access personal memory, skills, private workspaces or credentials. Use finish with exact evidence, uncertainty and changed files. Do not infer independent acceptance success."

Each receives the complete README contract and its fixed role instruction. Do not pre-solve their work or give defect locations. All three implement distinct owned modules and tests concurrently. Do not edit until all three workers have returned. You own pipeline.py and test_importer.py; after every worker returns, integrate and repair cross-module issues as needed across approved files. Run the combined local test suite and verify caller preservation and checkpoint/replay equivalence at every restart boundary. You have 15 lead iterations; each worker has 15 iterations, for 60 total. Include each worker contribution, conflicts/changes during integration and exact final evidence. Do not delegate again or resume a worker."

        "type": "text",
        "text": "1\t# Durable reservation importer\n2\t\n3\tThis is a deliberately prepared implementation exercise. The starter has deliberately seeded defects in otherwise complete implementations, not a historical agent failure. Use Python standard library only. Implement four modules. No network, concurrency or persistent disk storage is required. Only codec.py, reducer.py, checkpoint.py, pipeline.py, test_importer.py, test_codec.py, test_reducer.py and test_checkpoint.py may change.\n4\t\n5\t## Shared interfaces and state\n6\t\n7\t`codec.parse_event(line)` returns a canonical event dictionary from a JSON string. `reducer.empty_state()` returns `{\"stock\": {}, \"requests\": {}, \"seen\": {}}`. `reducer.apply_event(state, event)` takes a valid state and a canonical event and returns a NEW state. `checkpoint.dump_state(state)` returns canonical JSON text; `checkpoint.load_state(text)` returns a validated state. `pipeline.import_batch(state, lines)` takes a one-pass iterable of JSON strings and returns a new state. `pipeline.resume(text, lines)` loads a checkpoint, imports a batch, and returns the new canonical checkpoint text.\n8\t\n9\tThe exact state shape is:\n10\t\n11\t- stock: dictionary of nonempty string SKU to nonnegative integer quantity.\n12\t- requests: dictionary of nonempty string request ID to dictionary of nonempty SKU to positive integer quantity. Empty request dictionaries are allowed.\n13\t- seen: dictionary of nonempty string event ID to canonical event dictionary. Each key equals that event's id. A seen record persists after cancellation.\n14\t\n15\tBooleans are never integer quantities. Identifiers may contain whitespace, pipes, backslashes and Unicode; preserve their exact content. No Unicode normalization or stripping. Empty strings are forbidden, but a space alone is a nonempty string. Input state and every nested input object must remain unchanged on success and failure. Returned objects must have no mutable aliases into input state or input events. Replaying an event must also return detached data.\n16\t\n17\t## Events and canonicalization\n18\t\n19\tAccept precisely these object shapes, rejecting extra or missing fields with ValueError:\n20\t\n21\t- `{\"id\": ID, \"op\": \"restock\", \"sku\": SKU, \"qty\": Q}` where Q is a positive integer.\n22\t- `{\"id\": ID, \"op\": \"reserve\", \"request\": REQUEST, \"lines\": [[SKU, Q], ...]}`. Each input line is a JSON array of exactly two items. Q is a positive integer. Aggregate duplicate SKU quantities and sort by SKU using Python string ordering. Canonical lines are arrays of two items, never tuples. Empty lines are allowed.\n23\t- `{\"id\": ID, \"op\": \"cancel\", \"request\": REQUEST}`.\n24\t\n25\tIDs, SKU and REQUEST are nonempty strings. Reject malformed JSON, duplicate JSON object keys at any depth, non-object events and unsupported operations. Whitespace surrounding JSON text is accepted. Preserve ID/string values. Reject invalid input with ValueError, including non-string input to parse_event. Only parse_event must validate raw events; apply_event may assume its event is already canonical.\n26\t\n27\t## State transitions and identity\n28\t\n29\tCheck seen BEFORE business preconditions. If the event ID was seen with an equal canonical event, return a detached state with no change. If the ID was seen with a different event, raise ValueError. Thus reordered or split reserve lines that canonicalize identically are exact replays. Event IDs are global across operations and can never be reused for a different event, even after cancellation.\n30\t\n31\tRestock adds Q and may introduce a new SKU. Reserve requires an inactive request ID, all named SKUs already present in stock, and sufficient stock for ALL aggregate quantities. Deduct atomically and remember its quantities in requests. Empty reserve succeeds and creates an active empty request. Cancel requires an active request, restores its quantities and removes it. A request ID may be reused after cancellation, using a new event ID. Unknown/cancelled requests and insufficient/unknown stock raise ValueError. Rejected events must never enter seen. A later corrected batch can retry the same event ID.\n32\t\n33\t## Checkpoints\n34\t\n35\tThe exact wrapper is `{\"version\": 1, \"state\": STATE}`. dump_state validates state, then uses json.dumps with ensure_ascii=False, sort_keys=True, separators=(',', ':'), plus exactly one final newline. load_state accepts surrounding JSON whitespace and validates the wrapper and complete state. Reject duplicate JSON keys, extra/missing wrapper or state keys, a boolean or non-1 version, malformed JSON and invalid field types/quantities with ValueError.\n36\t\n37\tFor seen values, call parse_event on their JSON representation and require equality with the original value. Thus a checkpoint with unaggregated/reordered reserve lines is invalid; loading must not silently repair it. Validate all nested state fields. Structural validation is required; reconstructing historical stock or proving seen/request consistency is out of scope. Dumping an invalid state also raises ValueError. Loading/dumping must not mutate input data. Two equal valid states with different dictionary insertion order produce exactly equal checkpoint text. Loading a dumped state preserves all three state fields and their replay behavior, including seen IDs of cancelled requests. Floats and booleans are invalid quantities anywhere in state.\n38\t\n39\t## Integration and rollback\n40\t\n41\tpipeline uses codec.parse_event and reducer.apply_event. Process lines in order and consume the iterable once. All-or-nothing batch semantics: if any parse or transition raises ValueError, raise ValueError and leave the caller's entire state unchanged. Empty batch returns a detached equal state. resume must use checkpoint.load_state, import_batch, then checkpoint.dump_state.\n42\t\n43\tA real workflow must be able to stop after any event, dump and load its state, and finish the remaining events with exactly the same state and byte-identical final checkpoint as uninterrupted processing. This includes replaying old events after restart. Do not discard seen or request information to shrink checkpoints.\n44\t\n45\t## Verification\n46\t\n47\tThe starter test is only an import smoke test. Add regression tests and run them. Verify malformed input, canonical replay, cancellation/reuse, nested aliasing, failed batch rollback and restart equivalence. Report changed files, exact check commands/results, integration fixes and remaining uncertainty. The external course checker lives outside this workspace. Do not access it, other workspaces, parent directories, credentials or network services. Do not install dependencies, commit or write memory files. Use PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1. Previously `isinstance(True, int)` is True in Python, so boolean quantities were incorrectly accepted. This now satisfies the \"Booleans are never integer quantities\" rule for both restock and reserve quantities.\n2. Reserve duplicate-SKU aggregation now SUMS quantities: changed `quantities[sku] = qty` to `quantities[sku] = quantities.get(sku, 0) + qty`. Previously duplicate SKUs were overwritten rather than aggregated. Kept ordering by Python string sort via `sorted(quantities.items())`, and canonical lines remain lists (not tuples).\n\nAll other logic in codec.py was already correct per the contract: `unique_object`/`object_pairs_hook` for duplicate-key rejection, `read_json` for non-string/malformed JSON -> ValueError, exact field-set validation for extra/missing fields, nonempty-string checks, whitespace/backslash/Unicode preservation, float/zero/negative quantity rejection, and detached fresh dict from `json.loads`.\n\ntest_codec.py (created new file) — 26 unit tests covering:\n- malformed JSON + non-string input raise ValueError\n- duplicate JSON object keys at top level and at nested depth raise ValueError\n- non-object events and unsupported/missing ops raise ValueError\n- extra/missing fields raise ValueError; empty id/request/sku forbidden\n- restock/cancel/reserve canonicalization, whitespace-surrounded input accepted\n- reserve duplicate SKU aggregation, Python string sort ordering, arrays-not-tuples, empty lines\n- whitespace/backslash/Unicode identifier preservation, lone-space-is-nonempty, request preservation\n- boolean quantity rejected (restock + reserve), float rejected, zero/negative rejected\n- detached-return checks (mutating a copy doesn't affect original; aggregated lines are correct)\n\nTest command & result:\ncd /workspace && python3 -m unittest -v\nRan 27 tests (26 codec + 1 existing smoke test in test_importer.py) ... OK\n\nUnresolved interface issues: none within my codec role. I only edited the two files I own (codec.py, test_codec.py); other files were left untouched."

        "text": "Implemented and tested checkpoint.py and test_checkpoint.py.\n\n## Changes to checkpoint.py (owned file)\nFixed the seeded defects and added boolean/float quantity rejection:\n1. **`dump_state`** was using `sort_keys=False` → now `sort_keys=True` (required for byte-identical text across dict insertion orders).\n2. **`dump_state`** was emptying the seen field (`state['seen'] = {}`) — REMOVED. It now dumps the complete state including all seen records.\n3. **Validation of bool/floats as quantities everywhere**: `stock`, `requests`, and `seen` event quantities now reject `bool` (a subclass of `int`, which `codec.integer` alone would accept). Added `_validate_seen_event_quantities` to reject boolean/float quantities inside seen restock qty and reserve line quantities, since `parse_event`'s `integer()` helper does not reject bools.\n4. Added explicit seen `id == key` mismatch rejection; preserved existing `validate`/`dump_state`/`load_state` public interfaces. Kept `deepcopy` on dump/load for detachment and non-mutation.\n5. `load_state` unchanged in logic: uses `read_json` (rejects duplicate keys, accepts whitespace), checks exact wrapper key set, rejects bool/non-1 version via `type(...) is not int`, and deep-copies the validated state.\n\nNote: with `sort_keys=True`, the wrapper keys sort lexicographically in the byte output, so a dumped empty state is `{\"state\":{\"requests\":{},\"seen\":{},\"stock\":{}},\"version\":1}\\n` (the README's \"{\"version\":1,...}\" describes the logical wrapper; `sort_keys=True` is the governing serialization requirement).\n\n## Changes to test_checkpoint.py\nAdded 44 unittest regression tests covering: round-trip preserves all three fields and replay (including seen of cancelled requests + fresh reuse), exact dump text/format (ensure_ascii=False, sort_keys=True, separators, single trailing newline), byte-identical dump for reordered insertion order, surrounding-whitespace acceptance, rejection of duplicate/extra/missing wrapper & state keys, bool/non-1/string version, malformed JSON, invalid types/quantities (floats/bools/negatives/zeros/empty skus), invalid seen (unaggregated/reordered reserve, id mismatch, missing/extra fields, unknown op, bool/float quantities), dump of invalid state raises ValueError, and dump/load non-mutation of inputs.\n\n## Dependencies on codec behavior\n- `validate` calls `parse_event(json.dumps(event, ensure_ascii=False))` for each seen value and requires equality — matching the spec's \"unaggregated/reordered reserve lines are invalid\". Because `codec.integer` does not reject booleans, checkpoint adds its own bool rejection for seen quantities. `read_json` supplies duplicate-key rejection and whitespace tolerance.\n\n## Test command & results\n`cd /workspace && PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=1 python3 -m unittest -v`\nRan 91 tests (44 checkpoint + codec/reducer/importer) — all OK. Module-level run `python3 -m unittest test_checkpoint -v` → 44 tests OK.\n\n## Remaining uncertainty\n- Interpretation of wrapper key order: `sort_keys=True` sorts wrapper keys, so dumped text is `{\"state\":...,\"version\":...}`. I followed the explicit `sort_keys=True` requirement (also necessary for the byte-identical requirement). If the external checker instead requires literal `{\"version\":1,\"state\":...}` byte order, that would be mutually exclusive with `sort_keys=True`; my implementation matches the stated json.dumps parameter spec."
